Redo Kitchen Cabinets With Chalk Paint: A Step-by-Step Guide

Chalk paint has become a popular choice for refinishing kitchen cabinets due to its ease of use, versatility, and ability to create a distressed or vintage look. If you're considering using chalk paint to redo your kitchen cabinets, here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

Materials You'll Need:

  • Chalk paint in your desired color
  • Wax brush or polyurethane
  • Paintbrushes
  • Sandpaper
  • Screwdriver
  • Tack cloth

Step 1: Remove Cabinet Doors and Hardware

Start by removing the cabinet doors and hardware using a screwdriver. Label the doors and hardware so you know where they belong later.

Step 2: Clean and Sand Cabinets

Clean the cabinets thoroughly with a mixture of mild detergent and water. Allow them to dry completely. Once dry, sand the cabinets lightly with sandpaper to remove any glossy finish or dirt. Wipe away any sanding dust with a tack cloth.

Step 3: Apply the First Coat of Chalk Paint

Apply a thin, even coat of chalk paint to the cabinets using a paintbrush. Allow it to dry completely, usually for about 30 minutes to an hour.

Step 4: Sand and Distress (Optional)

If you want to create a distressed look, lightly sand the edges and corners of the cabinets once the first coat of paint is dry. You can also use a damp cloth to wipe away some of the paint in areas where you want the wood to show through.

Step 5: Apply a Second Coat of Chalk Paint

Apply a second coat of chalk paint to the cabinets. This coat can be thicker than the first. Allow it to dry completely.

Step 6: Seal the Cabinets

Once the paint is completely dry, seal the cabinets with either wax or polyurethane. Wax will give the cabinets a matte finish, while polyurethane will give them a glossier finish. Apply the sealant with a wax brush or paintbrush, working in thin, even strokes.

Step 7: Reattach the Doors and Hardware

Once the sealant is dry, reattach the cabinet doors and hardware. Your kitchen cabinets are now complete!

Tips for Using Chalk Paint on Kitchen Cabinets:

  • Chalk paint is a porous material, so it's important to seal it properly to protect it from moisture and spills.
  • If you're painting over existing paint, make sure to sand the surface lightly before applying chalk paint.
  • Don't overwork the paint. Apply thin, even coats and allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
  • Chalk paint can be used on a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, and glass.
