How to Replace Kitchen Countertop Laminate

Replacing kitchen countertop laminate is a straightforward project that can be completed in a few hours with minimal tools and materials. By following these steps, you can give your kitchen a fresh new look without breaking the bank.

Materials You'll Need:

  • New laminate sheets
  • Contact cement
  • Utility knife
  • Router with a laminate trimming bit
  • Backer rod
  • Caulk

Steps:

1. Prepare the Surface: Remove the old laminate by carefully prying it up with a utility knife. Clean the surface thoroughly using a degreaser to remove any dirt, grease, or debris.

2. Apply Contact Cement: Apply a thin, even coat of contact cement to the countertop surface and the back of the new laminate. Allow the cement to dry for 10-15 minutes, until it is tacky to the touch.

3. Position the Laminate: Carefully align the new laminate with the countertop and press it firmly into place, starting from the center and working outward. Use a rubber mallet or roller to smooth out any air bubbles.

4. Trim the Excess: Use a router fitted with a laminate trimming bit to trim the excess laminate along the edges. Be sure to wear safety glasses and gloves during this step.

5. Install Backer Rod: Apply a thin bead of backer rod along the back edge of the countertop to create a gap for the caulk.

6. Caulk the Edges: Apply a thin bead of caulk along the backsplash and any exposed edges of the laminate. Use a damp cloth to smooth out the caulk and remove any excess.

7. Allow to Cure: Allow the caulk to cure for 24 hours before using the countertop to ensure a strong bond.

Tips:

  • Use a sharp utility knife to cut the laminate for a clean finish.
  • Take your time when applying the contact cement and positioning the laminate to ensure a proper bond.
  • Use a laminate roller to press the laminate firmly into place and remove any air bubbles.
  • Be patient and allow the caulk to cure completely before using the countertop.
  • If you encounter any difficulties, consult a professional.
