How to Remove Kitchen Cabinets From Plaster Walls

Removing kitchen cabinets from plaster walls involves a series of careful steps to minimize damage to both the cabinets and the walls. The process requires patience, precision, and the right tools.

Gather Necessary Tools

Before starting, gather the following tools:

  • Pry bar
  • Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers
  • Hammer or mallet
  • Utility knife
  • Putty knife
  • Dust mask and safety glasses
  • Flashlight

Protect the Area

Cover the floor and countertops with drop cloths to protect them from falling debris. Wear a dust mask and safety glasses to avoid inhaling plaster dust.

Disconnect Utilities

If any cabinets are connected to water or electricity, shut off the appropriate utilities and disconnect the appliances.

Remove Doors and Hardware

Start by removing all cabinet doors, drawers, and drawer slides. Use a flathead screwdriver to unscrew any hinges or hardware. If the cabinets are secured with clips, simply push them in and remove the clips.

Use a Pry Bar to Separate Cabinets

Insert the pry bar between the cabinet and the wall. Gently pry the cabinet away from the wall, starting from the top corners and working your way down. Be careful not to damage the plaster or the cabinet.

Remove Nails or Screws

Once the cabinets are partially separated from the wall, use a nail or screw extractor to carefully extract any remaining nails or screws. This may require using a flashlight to locate hidden fasteners.

Scrape Off Plaster

If any plaster adheres to the back of the cabinets or the wall, gently scrape it off using a putty knife. Do not use excessive force to avoid damaging the surfaces.

Remove Cabinets and Clean the Walls

Once all nails and screws are removed, carefully lift the cabinets away from the wall and carry them out of the kitchen. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the walls and remove any remaining plaster dust or debris.

Additional Tips

If the plaster is particularly thick or brittle, you may need to use a hammer or mallet to gently tap the pry bar while prying the cabinets loose.

If you encounter any resistance while prying the cabinets, check for hidden nails or screws that may have been missed.

Take breaks frequently to avoid fatigue and reduce the risk of injury.
