How to Make Kitchen Cabinet Shaker Doors

Shaker-style doors are a classic and timeless choice for kitchen cabinets. They are characterized by their simple, clean lines and recessed panels. While they may look difficult to make, shaker doors are actually quite easy to construct with the right tools and materials.

Materials You'll Need:

1x10 pine boards
1/4-inch plywood
Wood glue
Clamps
Brad nails
Router
1/2-inch round over bit
Sandpaper
Paint or stain

Step 1: Cut the Rails and Stiles

The first step is to cut the rails and stiles for the door frame. The rails are the horizontal pieces that run along the top and bottom of the door, while the stiles are the vertical pieces that run along the sides. For a standard-sized cabinet door, the rails should be 18 inches long and the stiles should be 30 inches long.

Step 2: Assemble the Door Frame

Once the rails and stiles are cut, you can assemble the door frame. Apply wood glue to the edges of the rails and stiles, and then clamp them together. Be sure to square up the frame before clamping it.

Step 3: Create the Panel

The next step is to create the panel for the door. Cut a piece of 1/4-inch plywood to the same size as the door frame. Apply wood glue to the edges of the panel, and then insert it into the frame. Clamp the panel in place.

Step 4: Route the Panel

Once the panel is in place, you can route the edges to create the recessed panel effect. Set up your router with a 1/2-inch round over bit. Route around the edges of the panel, being careful not to cut through the plywood.
