How to Level Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Uneven or crooked kitchen cabinet doors can detract from the overall look of your kitchen. Fortunately, leveling them is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few easy steps.

Materials you'll need:

Level
Screwdriver
Drill (optional)
Wood filler (optional)

Step 1: Check the Doors

Begin by inspecting the cabinet doors to determine the extent of the leveling issue. Use a level to check both the vertical and horizontal alignment of the doors. Note any areas where the doors are not level.

Step 2: Adjust the Hinges

Most cabinet doors are attached to the cabinet frame using hinges. To adjust the height of the door, use a screwdriver to loosen the screws on the hinges. Once the screws are loose, you can gently lift or lower the door until it is level. Tighten the screws to secure the door in place.

To adjust the side-to-side alignment of the door, follow the same steps but adjust the screws on the side hinges. Again, use a level to ensure that the door is level before tightening the screws.

Step 3: Adjust the Cabinet Frame (Optional)

If adjusting the hinges alone does not resolve the issue, you may need to adjust the cabinet frame. To do this, use a drill to create pilot holes in the frame where the screws will be inserted. Insert the screws and tighten them until the cabinet frame is level.

Step 4: Fill Gaps (Optional)

Once the doors are level, you may notice some gaps between the door and the cabinet frame. To fill these gaps, apply wood filler to the affected areas. Allow the wood filler to dry and sand it smooth to match the surrounding finish.

Step 5: Final Check

Finally, use the level to check the doors again to ensure that they are level both vertically and horizontally. If necessary, make any further adjustments until the doors are perfectly level.
