How to Build a Soffit Above Kitchen Cabinets

A soffit is a decorative element that conceals the unsightly space between the top of the kitchen cabinets and the ceiling. It can add a touch of elegance to your kitchen and make the space feel more finished. Building a soffit is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours.

Materials you'll need:

1x6 pine boards
1x4 pine boards
1/2-inch plywood
Wood screws
Brad nails
Caulk
Paintable wood filler
Primer
Paint

Instructions:

1. Measure the length of the space between the top of the kitchen cabinets and the ceiling. Cut two 1x4 pine boards to this length.

2. Attach the 1x4 pine boards to the ceiling using wood screws. Make sure that the boards are level and flush with the front of the cabinets.

3. Cut two 1x6 pine boards to the same length as the 1x4 pine boards. These will form the sides of the soffit.

4. Attach the 1x6 pine boards to the 1x4 pine boards using wood screws. Make sure that the boards are flush with the front of the cabinets and that the corners are square.

5. Cut a piece of 1/2-inch plywood to fit the opening in the soffit. Attach the plywood to the 1x6 pine boards using brad nails.

6. Caulk the seams between the plywood and the 1x6 pine boards.

7. Fill any nail holes or other imperfections with paintable wood filler. Allow the wood filler to dry completely.

8. Prime and paint the soffit to match the kitchen cabinets.

9. Install crown molding around the perimeter of the soffit to give it a finished look.
