How to Sand and Stain Old Kitchen Cabinets
Are your kitchen cabinets looking tired and outdated? If so, you may be considering replacing them. However, refinishing your cabinets is a much more affordable and less time-consuming option. Here are the steps on how to sand and stain old kitchen cabinets:
Materials you will need:
- Sandpaper (120-grit, 220-grit)
- Orbital sander
- Tack cloth
- Wood filler
- Putty knife
- Primer
- Paint brush
- Stain
- Rags
- Polyurethane
Step 1: Remove the cabinet doors and hardware
Start by removing all of the cabinet doors and hardware. This will make it easier to sand and finish the cabinets.
Step 2: Sand the cabinets
Use an orbital sander with 120-grit sandpaper to remove the old finish from the cabinets. Be sure to sand in the direction of the wood grain.
Once you have removed the old finish, switch to 220-grit sandpaper and sand the cabinets again to smooth out the surface.
Step 3: Fill in any holes or cracks
Use wood filler to fill in any holes or cracks in the cabinets. Use a putty knife to apply the wood filler and smooth it out.
Step 4: Prime the cabinets
Apply a coat of primer to the cabinets. This will help the stain to adhere better to the wood.
Step 5: Stain the cabinets
Apply a coat of stain to the cabinets. Use a rag to apply the stain and wipe off any excess stain.
Allow the stain to dry completely.
Step 6: Apply polyurethane
Apply a coat of polyurethane to the cabinets. This will help to protect the stain and give the cabinets a durable finish.
Allow the polyurethane to dry completely.
Step 7: Reinstall the cabinet doors and hardware
Once the polyurethane is dry, reinstall the cabinet doors and hardware.
Your cabinets are now refinished and looking brand new!
