How to Make Kitchen Cabinet Doors With Glass
Adding glass to kitchen cabinet doors can instantly elevate the look of your kitchen, making it feel more spacious and inviting. While it may seem like a daunting task, making glass cabinet doors is actually a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours. Here are the essential steps on how to make kitchen cabinet doors with glass:
Materials You'll Need:
- Cabinet doors
- Glass panes
- Glazing compound
- Glazier's points
- Hammer
- Putty knife
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Glass
Measure the opening in the cabinet door where you want to install the glass. Transfer these measurements to the glass pane and mark the cutting line with a pencil. Use a glass cutter to score the glass along the line and then snap the glass to create a clean cut.
Step 2: Prepare the Cabinet Door
Remove the old cabinet door and lay it flat on a work surface. Using a putty knife, carefully remove the old glazing compound from the rabbet, which is the groove around the edge of the door that holds the glass in place.
Step 3: Install the Glass
Apply a thin bead of glazing compound to the bottom of the rabbet. Carefully place the glass pane into the rabbet, pressing it firmly into the compound. Use glazier's points to secure the glass in place. Space the points about every 6 inches around the perimeter of the glass.
Step 4: Apply Glazing Compound
Using a putty knife, apply a bead of glazing compound around the perimeter of the glass, covering the glazier's points. Smooth the compound out with the putty knife, creating a slightly concave surface to prevent water from pooling on the glass.
Step 5: Reinforce the Glass
For added strength and stability, you can reinforce the glass by adding a backing material, such as plywood or MDF. Cut the backing material to the size of the glass and secure it to the back of the glass with wood glue or screws.
Step 6: Reinstall the Cabinet Door
Once the glazing compound has dried completely, you can reinstall the cabinet door. Align the door with the hinges and screws and secure it in place. Wipe away any excess glazing compound that may have squeezed out during installation.
Tips for Success:
- Wear gloves and safety glasses when working with glass.
- Use a sharp glass cutter for clean cuts.
- Apply glazing compound evenly and smoothly.
- Allow the glazing compound to dry completely before handling the cabinet door.
- If you make a mistake, don't panic. Simply remove the glazing compound and start over.
